Aphrodisiacs – Food for Love

Food is not just eaten for our existence, but for nourishing our minds and enhancing desires. Its common knowledge we always tend to gravitate to certain foods or food types as and when we experience different emotions. The smell, feel and texture of what we consume have a direct bearing on our six senses. Some foods elevate our moods, while some calm us and some add onto our misery. Foods that have a positive and sexual enhancing effect on us are called as aphrodisiac foods. So, if you are keen to set the mood right, here is what should be eating and feeding.

Avocado: Avocado is referred as the fruit of the “testicle tree” by the Aztecs and because of its shape has been correlated with sexuality. This concept is borne out of fruit hanging in pairs on the tree giving it the appearance of the male’s testicles. The texture of an avocado is soft and sensuous. The fruit is rich in vitamin B6 and potassium, both immune system enhancers.

Almonds: Almond is seen as a symbol of fertility. Almonds are rich in vitamin E, magnesium and fiber, aiding in increasing blood flow to the sexual organs. It is believed that raw and slightly roasted almonds arouse passion and sexual desires in women.

Banana: Its shape is highly symbolical to the male sex organ. Besides this, a banana is rich in potassium and magnesium which increase the male libido.

Chocolate: Chocolate can do what no other aphrodisiac can do. It contains the feel-good chemicals that releases dopamine in the brain and tantalizes orgasm. It contains cocoa which is sedating to the mind and relaxing to the body. Chocolate can be eaten or applied, works just as well, and yes, the darker the better!

Figs:  The ancient Greeks associated figs with love and fertility. A half cut fig is symbolical of the female sex organ. The fruit; fresh and dried is rich in fiber and contains arousing stimulants. Fig’s myth as a sexual fruit is further enhanced by the biblical story of Adam and Eve covering their genitals with fig leaves.

Oysters: Oysters are notorious in enhancing the male and female libido. They contain high levels of zinc which is needed to increase production of sperms in the males, as well as the sex hormones in men and women both. Oysters were used during wedding feast as a symbol for romantic and sexual association.

Berries: The red luscious berries, be it raspberries, cherries or strawberries are all known as ‘love foods’. They are high in vitamin C and zinc, and are used as sexually stimulating foods.

Honey: Honey was used by Roman and Greeks to enhance the flavor of drinks before a sexual encounter. It contains several B vitamins and trace minerals which aid in increasing the female sexual hormone; estrogen and enhances blood flow in the male organs.

Most aphrodisiac foods are symbolical in nature; physical resemblance to the male and female sexual organs and natural food by-product as seeds in fruits represent seeds as semen. Other aphrodisiac food includes nutmeg, vanilla, pinefruit, pineapple, ginger, coffee, asparagus, etc. There is no fixed list for foods that can enhance sexuality. You eat what affects your senses and gets you in a mood!
